The Importance of a Website Analysis

A website analysis is the best place to start when considering or beginning an SEO campaign. In order to execute successful SEO it makes sense to investigate where your problem areas lie and what needs immediate attention.

The significant benefits of a website analysis are as follows;

Identify Internal Problems

A Website analysis checks all of the structural elements of a website that are relevant to SEO. It makes sure that metadata is included where it is supposed to be and checks the quality of your internal and external links and anchors. Your analysis will also advise on how deep your pages are (how many clicks it takes to get to), how old (or last updated), if they take too long to load (kilobytes) and how accessible your website is to Search Engines (robots file and sitemap).

Making sure these important structural elements are correct not only ensures the Search Engines can correctly navigate their way around your website, it also lays a strong foundation for any future SEO work or adjustments.

On Page Issues

The website analysis will report on all of the on page elements to make sure that everything that should be on the site, is there, and that these elements are sufficiently optimized. This includes mainly menu, image and link data, such as titles and alt tags.

Find Out More About Ideal Keywords To Target

Along with the analysis report, there will usually be a limited amount of keyword research and recommendations based on keywords that you initially supplied. These recommendations can act as a guide to whether you need to put in some extra research time to select a list of better targeted keywords or whether the ones you currently have, are going to work well for you.

What Is Working Well For Your Site?

Not everything in the website analysis is negative. The majority of websites have at least one good thing going for them, whether it is their design, colours, menu systems or great copy. Most business people have trouble seeing their website objectively, and often don’t realise or overlook their current assets. A little encouragement in these areas can turn a good thing into a great thing.

Current Site Popularity and Ranking

Do you know what sites have links to you? There is quite a large importance placed on the amount of websites and the quality of those websites that link back to you. This is because having good quality links shows the Search Engines that your site contains relevant content and there is a bunch of other well ranked websites that think so too. Your website analysis will show you which sites are linking to you and the quality of these sites.

Do you know what pages of your website have actually been found by search engines? The website analysis provides an indexed pages report which cover all the major search engines so you can see which pages have been found and which have been missed for some reason. The analysis …

Tips On Doing Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the process of or a series of steps that one takes in an effort to make their website or other online assets more visible to others when others are searching for content online using search engines. This is also often referred to as positioning one’s assets to be found by “organic” searches as opposed to “Pay Per Click” (PPC) where you pay a fee to the search engines themselves so that they will help your site to stand out and be found.

So what actually is involved in this process called SEO? What are the steps you want to take to build out your online assets so as to be more easily found? My list below is by no means complete but it will serve to give you a solid overview to tasks you can complete to make your site more visible.

Search Engine Registration: The first thing you will want to do is to get your website registered with the search engines themselves. Most search engines offer you a method whereby you can tell them about your site and site ownership and you can also tell them what webpages exist on your website through submission of a “Sitemap.xml” file to them.

Search Engine Indexing: Next you will want to tell them more about your individual webpages so that this information can be stored and “Indexed” in their internal databases for use when people are making “Organic” searches. Each search engine has their own method of accepting your webpage indexing requests for example; Yahoo-Bing allows you to submit 10 webpages for indexing a day and Google, the largest search engine in the world today, provides you with a webpage indexing request tool called “Fetch as Google” where you can enter your pages to be indexed. Remember when using this tool to register each page as a standard webpage and also to register these same pages separately for mobile pages if they are “Mobile Responsive” in construction as Google maintains separate databases for mobile pages and to get found organically on a cellphone, you will need to have them registered in this second database as well.

Link Building: This is the art of building links back to your site from other quality Internet locations usually owned by others. This is often done by leaving posts on other forums, asking other site owners to link their sites with yours, building a presence on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Reddit, etc. and tying your presence on those sites back to your website, writing articles and press releases that mention your site, posting videos to places like YouTube and Vimeo that tie back to you, publishing e-books and more. The more “External Backlinks” you can create to your site, the stronger your site looks in the eyes of Google and other search engines and the better your site will rank within those engines organically.

On Site Optimization: There are also things you can do …

Search Engine Marketing – The Past, The Present, And The Future

1997 – 1999 were the early years of search engine era. Internet Marketing and more specifically search engine marketing mainly understood of submitting your sites to the search engines. These "voices from the past" are still heard today when this or that search engine optimization company and / or automatic submitting software will claim to do search engine promotion for you by submitting your site to hundreds and thousands of engines and directories. The search engines' indexing programs, called "robots" or "spiders", looked through all of the HTML code of a page and used some page ranking algorithms that they kept in secret.

Those days were spammers' Heaven: it was rather easy to get your site ranked high. You could just use your keywords lots of times on the page, in the META tags, HTML comments etc. And hide it from the human visitors by making the text tiny or completely invisible with the help of HTML tricks. The search engines did not have any sophisticated technique to recognize this kind of spam, and such sites usually got high rankings very easily. Today, you still can find some samples of this primitive optimization (even though you will have to give it a hard try, because nowdays most of such web projects have been banned by the search engines for excessive keyword usage).

The only exception was Yahoo which has always been indexed by humans who could in most cases identify and ban spamming pages.
Gradually, search engines started recognizing spam and applying corresponding penalties to Web pages using spam methods. However, search engine optimizers were always one step behind the search engines in finding new ways of cheating the indexing algorithms. Here each search engine is committed to delivering only relevant results to its visitors, the engines needed to take control away from the spammers and auto-submitters. Many began to try different ways of indexing.

The Rise of Google

If someone is asked today about the first search engine to remember, the answer will be Google in 100% cases. Google has started its way to be the King of search engines in 2000 and in 2002 its right for this title has been firmly established, with around 70% of searches done on the Internet. While other search engines were focusing on transforming to universal portals, Google kept a simple and – which has become its distinct feature – fast interface that strictly targeted delivering relevant search results.

Google also developed advanced features such as indexing and searching PDF (portable document format) and SWF (shockwave flash) files. Additionally, Google's sophisticated techniques to use the "off-the-page" factors made it extremely spam-resistant. Google's dominance has become steady in 2000 with Yahoo having switched from Inktomi to Google as secondary search result provider. Now, Yahoo uses the combination of Overture's and own search software and index repository, so being completely independent on Google, however, without any slightest impact on the dominance of the latter.

Global Consolidation

By 2001, the results of all major engines …

Discover the Advantages and Disadvantages of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) vs Pay Per Click

You’ve just launched your new website (or launched the redesign) and now you’re sitting back waiting for the orders to roll in. But wait a minute, something’s wrong… there don’t seem to be any. It’s as if your site doesn’t exist.

Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but unless you have either a well publicised site or many websites linking to yours, you’re going to have to rely on the search engines. And if your site doesn’t rank in the first three result pages, it’s more than likely you won’t be found at all.

So… you know what’s coming next; that’s right, you need a good dose of search engine marketing (SEM) to make sure your site gets listed on the search engines’ results pages. Do this and the traffic to your website will soon follow.

“Right”, I hear you say. “Let’s do some search engine marketing then…”

Well that’s certainly a good start! But first you have to work out your approach to maximise your returns. Let’s call this your search engine marketing strategy. In order to create an effective strategy you need to understand a bit more about how search engine marketing works. Currently, we can roughly-speaking separate search engine marketing into two different approaches:

  1. Organic: including search engine optimisation, links from other websites and offline marketing.
  2. Paid: including pay per click, paid submission and online advertising (banner ads).

So to help you further, I’ve listed below the advantages and disadvantages to each approach to SEM and outlined my recommendations.

Organic: Advantages

  1. The majority of the work behind search engine optimisation (SEO) is a one-off activity, and so is usually charged out at a set upfront fee.
  2. The changes made to your website will probably still be relevant and driving traffic to your site a year from now.
  3. Credibility: most people (research indicates between 60 and 80 percent) will click on the organic results rather than the sponsored (paid) results.
  4. If you rank well in one of the major search engines (Google/Yahoo/MSN), you will most likely show up in the majority of the search engines worldwide.

Organic: Disadvantages

  1. Changes must be made to your website’s code. Normally the changes are invisible to visitors. However, if you have invested heavily in a search engine-unfriendly site, the process can be time-consuming and costly; and occasionally significant changes may need to be made to your site’s copy, navigation or design. Of course ultimately, you’ll see returns if you commit to the necessary changes.
  2. Results (rankings and traffic) start slowly. You will normally see results within 3-4 months.
  3. There can be no guarantee. As the search engines themselves have the final say, you can’t predict how many rankings you’ll get for a particular search term or engine; nor can you predict how much traffic you’ll get to your site.

Paid: Advantages

  1. Pay per click (PPC) advertising programs are fast to implement. It usually takes two to three weeks to set up and run. Google AdWords are up-and-running as soon as

SEO Software: Trying To Catch The Spiders…

SEO software does what exactly?

SEO software frequently starts from the following assumption:

– look at the page that ranks number 1 in Google,

– do exactly the same + a bit better,

– and you will be number 1

SEO software will then examine “all” the SEO parameters that it finds out about the number 1 site in Google. Then this SE software will automate the process in mimicking this for your site.

SEO is more than a software-approach!

SEO is the art of ranking number 1 in any search engine for any keyword.

Spiders rank a web site number one because spiders “think” that this site deserves to be number one. Of course the spider cannot think: there needs to be a programmer who programs the spider to find out which site is best.

Now if you are smart enough to feed the spider exactly what the programmer thinks is important, you will have the knowledge to rank number 1.

This is exactly what SEO software does: it claims to know and tackle “all” the parameters that make a web site ranking number 1.

Pitfalls of a software-approach to SEO

Suppose you find all the parameters needed to rank a web site number 1. You manage to get all this parameters onto your site and you even manage to be rank number 1.

Now if your site is really deserving to be ranked number 1, all is fine. But if surfers start complaining that you are not, the search engine will be blamed!

It won’t take long until Google finds out that “somebody broke the code” of the spiders. The spiders will be updated to give quality results to the visitors!

This means you need to get an upgrade of your SEO software approach… : you are running after the facts in stead of above the facts.

How to be ranked number 1?

You rank number 1 because you deserve it.

In spider logic this still means:

– your page talks about the keyword you are optimizing for

– you page has lots of incoming links about the keyword you are optimizing for.

This is what ranking number 1 should be about.

But my SEO software is really up to date, or is it not?

Your software can only be up to date AFTER the spiders’ software is updated. Unless you write the spiders yourself, you will always be a bit later.

You cannot know all the parameters the spider takes into account, unless again you are writing the spider software yourself.

Some of the parameters you cannot influence: age of the web site is one of them. Suppose the spider needs to choose between 2 websites: the oldest one and the SEO mimic: which one to choose? The oldest one would be the easiest bet, and you cannot change the age of your web site can you?

A close look at SEO software

SEO software advertisements could say that you can get a top 5 Google Ranking …

Choosing the Best SEO Services Company

When choosing an SEO services company, you should consider a few things to be able to make the right choice. It is important to note that good search engine optimization (SEO) for your website means more business for you. This is because it will lead to more visibility of your site, hence more traffic, more prospects, more conversions and higher profits. It is the lifeline for the long term success of your business. Therefore, as you choose the company to aid you with your SEO efforts, make a wise choice right from the start to avoid compromising on your web based business.

To start with, you should ask yourself whether SEO is right for your business. If you need more exposure to more clients and potential customers, then the answer here is a no brainer. This decision can also be informed by your level of expertise in terms of SEO. If you are good at implementing SEO yourself, then you can make a quick decision on where to start with your efforts for better search engine visibility. Else, start the process of identifying the most appropriate SEO company to help you out.

The very first sign of a genuine SEO services company is a need to evaluate your website before they offer a quote. These companies know that sometimes, your entire website needs a very small alteration to completely change and become very visible and competitive. They, therefore, insist on evaluating your site to identify what needs to be changed or to be included for better visibility, before you even talk about costs. Avoid SEO companies that will promise and “guarantee” you first page rankings in almost no time. These companies will most likely use some black hat and prohibited techniques to rank your site. The result is temporary good rankings, which fade away as fast as they came. You may also end up getting your site penalized or even banned from the search results, meaning a loss of business and investment capital.

Upon identification of a potential SEO company, find out if they have any certifications. These work towards giving you more confidence in their services. A company that has been identified by various independent authorities for excellent service will most likely give you a very satisfactory outcome with your SEO campaigns. On top of the certifications, they should also have a verifiable portfolio of current and previous clients who are happy with their service.

A huge sign of success that may be delivered by the SEO company of choice is their own website. How well does the SEO company’s website rank for their main keywords? If they are competitively ranked, then you can use them to help with your SEO efforts. If they are nowhere to be found in the search engines, then you cannot expect much from them.

Finally, the cost of the service should be affordable and cheap enough for your pocket, but well enough to guarantee quality service. Remember that success with SEO is an …

Online Vs Offline SEO: Which Is Best for Your Business?

If you ask anyone who works in the SEO industry what optimisation means and what its purpose is, they’ll probably be able to give you a quick, if not necessarily straightforward answer. The aim is clearly to improve the status of your business website /brand on the results pages of search engines: the higher the ranking, the more likely users will be attracted to your services. Now ask those very same people how to best achieve this and the waters start to get a little muddier.

Some SEO experts favour on-page, or on-line optimisation techniques, others prefer off-page. The majority, you would hope, would recommend a combination of the two strategies. If it could just be left at that, the world would be a simpler place. However, SEO professionals don’t seem to do ‘simple’. They’ll start telling you about the importance of ‘organic’ marketing, ‘Meta tag’ settings and other weird and wonderful sounding concepts that you really ‘must’ use. Is it any wonder we mere mortals get confused? What do any of these terms actually mean? Well, hopefully after you’ve read this article the waters may become a little clearer.

On-page SEO refers to the optimisation of the pages that make up your actual business website. This is the more technical aspect of the optimisation process and refers to those factors that have an effect on website or webpage listings in natural search results: these factors are controlled by you or by the coding on your web pages. Any optimisation will focus on the keywords that make up the content or the copy on your web site. It will also look at areas like HTML coding, Meta tags, unique content, website design and layout. Essentially on-page optimisation is all about tweaking all the technical bits and bobs that lurk beneath the surface, so that both search engines and ordinary users are given the precise information they’re looking for: the better and more accurate the results, then the greater the traffic.

Offline SEO refers to the optimisation of the pages away from your website. They are referred to as ‘off-page’ because they are not controlled by you or by the coding on your website. Off-page optimisation techniques focus predominantly on areas like link building, directory and article submission, blog posting and forum posting. The purpose of offline optimisation is to maximise all the links that come off your website pages to encourage a higher placing in the search engine results.

So which is best?

It won’t surprise you to learn that there isn’t a simple answer to this. Well, there wouldn’t be, would there? Each has its own merits and limitations. It’s all a matter of horses for courses: it depends on what your ultimate goal is and how quickly you expect to see the results.

Traditionally on-page optimisation will produce better long-term results, but these can take time.  If your business aim is to get yourself established on the likes of Google and Bing or other high-ranking search engines, then …
